titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to sewing machines
abstract 868,015. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 6, 1957], No. 24787/58. Class 112 Lock-stitching by rotary hooks. In a rotary hook in which the opening of the gap between shoulders on the bobbin-holder and its retainer for passage of the needle thread is produced by the inertia effect of a slight eccentricity of the axis of rotation of the hook body in relation to the centre of curvature of a raceway in said body for a circumferential rib on the bobbin-holder, said raceway is provided in its region of maximum eccentricity with an insert of metal adapted to minimise the tendency of the co-operating surfaces of raceway and rib to weld, seize or gall. The hook body 12 is formed with a cavity 14 for receiving a bobbin-holder 15 formed with a circumferential rib 16 which co-operates with a raceway in said cavity. Body 12 and holder 15 are of hardened steel with rib 16 being chromium plated. Body 12 is provided with an insert 31 which subtends an angle of approximately 45 degrees, and is disposed at an angle of approximately 140 degrees from the loop-seizing beak 28 of body 12. The insert is preferably made from a copper-zinc alloy. The inner wall of the raceway is provided by a ledge 24a formed in body 12, and by a flange 31c on the insert. The outer wall of the raceway is provided by a flange 34 which extends on body 12 from beak 28 to a point adjacent the insert, and also by a flange 23 on a gib 21 secured to body 12 by screws 22. Gib 21 extends from the insert to a thread-retaining point 35 adjacent beak 28. A thread guard 32, secured to body 12 by screws 33, is formed at its front end with a point which is adjacent beak 28 and co-operates therewith in retaining the seized loop of needle thread. The rear end of guard 32 is formed with a needle-passing notch 32b, one side 32c of which conforms to a rear sloping edge 31d of the insert. The latter may be soldered in position or may be secured by screws or rivets. Alternatively, the insert may be produced by a sprayed metal process. Specifications 408,466, 676,955, 757,256 and U.S.A. Specification 2,762,325 are referred to.
