abstract | Strongly basic anion-exchange resins containing polar quaternary ammonium groups are prepared by reacting a tertiary amine with an insoluble, cross-linked copolymer containing recurring chlorohydrin ester units of the formula: <FORM:0867397/IV (a)/1> where R represents hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group and R* represents a -CH2CHClCH2OH, -CH(CH2OH)CH2Cl or -CH2CHOHCH2Cl group. Specified tertiary amines are trimethylamine, dimethyl benzylamine, dibenzyl methylamine, dimethylaniline, benzyl-phenyl-methylamine, N, N-dimethylethanolamine, N-methyldiethanolamine and triethanolamine. The chlorhydrin ester copolymers and the conditions of reaction with the tertiary amines are those described in the parent Specification. Specifications 717,305 and 867,398 also are referred to. |
