titleOfInvention Foam suppressing compositions
abstract A composition for suppressing foaming in aqueous media having a pH lower than 7 comprises an aliphatic amine containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, a nonionic surface-active agent and a liquid carrier, the weight ratio of said surface-active agent to said aliphatic amine being between 0.01 and 0.05. Examples of the amine components are tributylamine, 2-ethylhexylamine, tertiary octylamine, decylamine, cyclohexylbutyl amine, dodecylamine, hexadecylamine, hexadecenylamine, octadecylamine, octadecenylamine or octadecadienylamine. Commercially available amines are particularly useful, such as "Armeen TD" (the word "Armeen" is a Registered Trade Mark) (30% hexadecylamine, 25% octadecylamine, and 45% octadecenylamine), "Armeen 2HT" (30% dihexadecylamine, 25% dioctadecylamine, and 45% dioctadecenylamine), "Alkylamine 81" or "Primene 81" (mixture of primary amines having a tertiary carbon atom adjacent the nitrogen atom and containig 12-15 carbon atoms per alkyl chain), and "Alkylamine JM-R" or "Primene JM-R" (a mixture of primary amines having a tertiary carbon atom adjacent the nitrogen atom and containing 18-24 atoms per alkyl chain). Preferred surface-active agents are polyoxyethylene ethers of octylphenol, mono fatty acid esters of polyethylene glycol, and fatty acid esters of sorbitan such as sorbitan monooleate. The generally preferred carriers are mineral oils of lubricating viscosity, mixtures of alcohols, propylene glycol, alkylene glycols, ketones, esters, 2-butoxy-ethanol and diethyllene glycon monobutyl ether. Oleic, caprylic and linoleic acids are used as haze eliminators.
