titleOfInvention Self-hardening alkali- and acid-resistant water glass cements capable of swelling
abstract A cement comprises alkali metal water glass, a divalent metal cyanamide and a powdered calcium-aluminium-iron silicate of approximate composition by weight: 5-15% of SiO2; 30-50% of Al2O3; 5-15% of Fe2O3; 35-45% of CaO. The preferred proportion of metal cyanamide is 0,1-10%, and of the calcium-aluminium iron silicate 5-50%, based on the weight of the cement powder. Specified cyanamides are lead, calcium or barium. The alkali metal water glass consists of a sodium and/or potassium water glass, the molar ratios being between 2,0 : 1 and 3,0 : 1 for SiO2:Na2O and between 1,7 : 1 and 2,5 : 1 for SiO2 : K2O and may be incorporated either in powder form or in solution, the molar ratio SiO2 : H2O in the latter case being higher than 0,33 : 1. When used in the powdered form there may be added, to make up the cement, an emulsion with water of polyvinyl chloride or co-polymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, or other plastic material miscible with water glass solutions. A hardener may also be added, e.g. 1-10% based on the weight of the cement powder of a silicafluoride, sulphochloride, acid ester, acid amide, or metal oxide; formamide, p-toluene sulphochloride or homologue, methyl acetate or homologue, or an oxide of magnesium zinc or lead being specified as suitable such additives. Quartz powder may also be incorporated.
