abstract The invention comprises metaboric esters and mixed orthoboric esters of substituted phenols having the formula: <FORM:0864840/IV (b)/1> wherein R stands for a tertiary, alkyl group having 4-10 carbon atoms, preferably t-butyl or t-amyl and R1 stands for hydrogen or for the group: <FORM:0864840/IV (b)/2> which are prepared by esterifying the phenol by heating it with boric acid or anhydride or an alkyl metaborate in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 10 carbon atoms to give the metaborate of the phenol used, or with a trialkyl orthoborate or a 1, 2 or 1, 3-glycol monoborate to give a mixed orthoborate, i.e. orthoboric acid in which one acid hydroxyl group is replaced by the substituted phenoxy group and the other two acidic hydroxy groups are replaced by alkyl groups or a glycol residue. The products are useful as additives for hydrocarbon lubricants and fuels (see Group III). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 815,140.ALSO:Metaboric esters and mixed orthoboric esters of phenols of the formula: <FORM:0864840/III/1> wherein R stands for a tertiary alkyl group having 4-10 carbon atoms and R1 stands for hydrogen or for the group <FORM:0864840/III/2> or <FORM:0864840/III/3> the orthoboric esters containing one phenol group and two alkyl groups or a glycol residue, are used as additives for hydrocarbon lubricants and fuels, such as lubricating oils and greases, gasolines, diesel oils and jet engine fuels, in concentrations from 0.005 to 1%. For example, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenyl metaborate may be added to JP-5 jet fuel in a concentration between 0.01 and 0.1% (for preparation of the esters see Group IV(b)). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 815.140.
