titleOfInvention Isomerization process
abstract <PICT:0863802/IV (b)/1> A mixture of C5 and C6 hydrocarbons is isomerised by separating iso-pentane from a fresh feed and recycle feed containing n- and iso-pentanes, passing the bottoms from this step with hexanes to the isomerisation step, which is effected in the presence of a solid isomerisation catalyst, separating from the effluent a fraction containing hexanes and a recycle-fraction containing n- and iso-pentanes and recovering iso-pentane and hexanes as product. Fresh feed containing C5 and C6 hydrocarbons is passed by line 12, together with recycle from line 108 to fractionator 14 operated at 0-200 p.s.i.g. and 80.320 DEG F. from which iso-pentane product is recovered by line 22. The bottoms are heated and isomerised in the presence of hydrogen in reactor 33, e.g. by the process described in Specifications 863,800 and 863,801. The effluent is cooled and hydrogen separated and recycled and fed into fractionator 66 from which C4 and lighter products are obtained overhead. This fractionator may be operated at 100-400 p.s.i.g. and 140-390 DEG F. The bottoms are further fractionated in tower 94 operated at 0-200 p.s.i.g. and 100-350 DEG F. to separate n-and iso-pentanes overhead for recycle by line 108 and hexane bottoms. Hexane product, together with hexanes separated from the feed if desired, may be fractionated to separate iso-hexanes from n-hexane, the former being recovered as product, the latter being combined with bottoms from fractionator 14 for isomerisation.
