titleOfInvention 5-substituted hydrantoins and their preparation
abstract The invention comprises 5-(2,4-dihalophenyl) hydantoins and their salts (e.g. alkali and alkaline-earth metal, ammonium and amine salts) and pharmaceutical preparations containing them (see Group VI). The substituted hydantoins can be made by reacting an appropriate 2,4-dihalobenzaldehyde with an alkali metal cyanide and ammonium carbonate.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a 5-(2,4-ditalophenyl) hydantoin, or a salt thereof, and a pharmaceutical carrier therefor. For parenteral injection, the carrier may be sterile water; for oral administration, the dosage may be in the form of a capsule, a powder adapted for suspension in liquid media, or a tablet. They have anti-epileptic activity; and the active ingredients may also be used as plant growth regulants. Specified salts are those with alkali metals (e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium) and alkaline-earth metals (e.g. magnesium), ammonium salts, and salts of organic bases (e.g. ethanolamine and ethylenediamine).
