titleOfInvention | Zone refining process |
abstract | A substance is purified from one or more impurities by forming a eutectic mixture with a second substance, subjecting the mixture to zone refining, and thereafter removing the second substance. Lead nitrate may be purified by forming a eutectic mixture with potassium nitrate. Sodium carbonate and sodium and potassium nitrate may be purified by <PICT:0861479/III/1> forming a eutectic mixture with water. An apparatus for the refining of a eutectic mixture which is liquid at ordinary temperature comprises a chamber 1 heated at an intermediate point by a resistance coil 5 and cooled at each side of the coil by cooling material 10, e.g. solid carbon dioxide or liquid air. A sealed tube 11 containing the eutectic mixture 12 to be refined is passed from one end of the chamber to the other by means of a rod 14 passing through the end 3 of the chamber. The tube 11 may be shaken to obtain a homogeneous liquid zone. A number of heating and cooling zones may be arranged alternately. An apparatus comprising 4 electric ovens in series and its use for the refining of lead nitrate are also described. |
