titleOfInvention Improvements in the permanent deformation of live human hair and other keratinous fibres
abstract In a process for the permanent deformation of live human hair and other keratinous fibres, the hair or fibres are impregnated with a freshly prepared aqueous solution obtained by adding, to an aqueous stock solution having a pH of 8-9,5 of a N- mono substituted or N- unsubstituted mercapto alkanoic acid amide, an acid or acidic buffer composition in a quantity sufficient to ensure a pH of 5-7,5 in the resulting solution; the hair or fibres are then constrained in a desired configuration and fixed in known manner while held in such a configuration. Mercapto alkanoic acid amides preferably used are those having the general formula: <FORM:0859347/IV (c)/1> in which R and R1 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing not more than 4 carbon atoms and R11 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl group containing not more than 4 carbon atoms. The concentration of amide in the amide solution is preferably 0,5-1,5 molar and the alkalinity may be adjusted to a pH of 8-9,5 by the addition of weak bases, e.g. ammonia or organic bases such as mono-, di- or triethanolamine. The acid or acidic buffer composition may contain weak acids, e.g. acetic, citric or lactic acid, or salts possessing marked buffering properties and giving acid solutions on hydrolysis, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of phosphoric, citric or phthalic acid, which may be in the form of an aqueous solution or a powder.
