titleOfInvention Process for preparing ªÏ-amino-alkane carbonitriles
abstract o -Aminocarbonitriles are obtained by passing lactams in the vapour phase, mixed with an excess of ammonia gas, over a dehydration catalyst at elevated temperature, said vapour-gas mixture passing over said catalyst either containing no oxygen or less than 1 p.p.m. by volume thereof. The low oxygen content increases the life and selectivity of the catalyst. Suitable catalysts are aluminium oxide, kaolin or thorium oxides. Working temperatures are preferably not in excess of 330 DEG C. Low oxygen content is achieved (1) by melting the lactam starting material under nitrogen which has been freed from oxygen by passage over copper at 300 DEG C.; (2) by separating non-converted ammonia gas from the liquid reaction product at pressures higher than 1 atm, before recycling it to the process; and (3) by placing an oxygen-absorbing substance in the vapour-gas stream in advance of the catalyst. Specified starting materials are caprolactam and caprylolactam. Specifications 707,323 and 828,850 are referred to.
