abstract | 855,812. Batteries. SOC. DES ACCUMULATORS FIXES & DE TRACTION. May 3, 1957 [May 5,1956; March 22, 1957], No.14198/57. Class 53 A gas-tight storage battery is provided with absorbent separators capable of swelling when wet, the plates and separators being maintained under pressure, by a spring 9, for example. If the casing 1 is of metal the connection to the negative plates may be made through the spring and casing. The plates may consist of sintered nickel impregnated respectively with nickel hydroxide mixed with cobalt hydroxide, and cadmium hydroxide. The separators may consist of a number of layers comprising cellulosic fibres and a binder, and synthetic fibres agglomerated or woven. Alternatively the fibres may be attached to a porous backing such as a polyamide fabric. The separators may be' provided with smooth surfaces by passing them between heated rollers rotating at different speeds or by the application of a film of the adhesive used for bonding the fibres together. The caustic potash electrolyte is absorbed in the plates and separators but a small quantity of free electrolyte may occupy the space below the plates and separators or above them if the plates and separators extend to the bottom of the casing. The volume of the electrolyte between each pair of plates is between and 1 2 c.c. per amperehour capacity. Specification 715,903 is referred to. |
