titleOfInvention | Method of producing nitrogen dioxide in a nuclear reactor |
abstract | <PICT:0855191/III/1> Nitrogen dioxide and nitrous oxide are produced by subjecting air at a pressure exceeding 10 atmospheres in a nuclear reactor to the ionizing radiation present in the reactor and the oxides of nitrogen are removed from the reactor. Air is pumped by pump 2 into nuclear reactor 1 and at 10-25 atmos. and 175-225 DEG C. is subjected to fission fragments, BETA-and g -rays, and fast neutrons from a fine dispersion of enriched uranium or plutonium. Where the air is used to extract heat from the reactor it is passed through steam generator or gas turbine 3, otherwise the treated air flows direct to cooling tower 4, where liquid N2O4 condenses. The residual air is returned through compressor 7, with resulting cooling which removes N2O if desired, to the reactor 1. |
