abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0855022/IV(b)/1> and their alkali metal salts (wherein R1 is a hydrocarbon radical in which any aromatic ring present can be substituted by halogen atoms or C1-3 alkyl or alkoxy groups, or a pyridylalkyl, thienylalkyl or furylalkyl radical; and R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or like or unlike C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy groups or halogen atoms), and the preparation thereof by: (1) heating a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0855022/IV(b)/2> (wherein X is a hydrocarbon radical) with a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0855022/IV(b)/3> until at least two moles of the alcohol XOH have been liberated; or (2) treating a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0855022/IV(b)/4> with an alkaline condensing agent. Compounds of formula IV above may be made by N-acylating and esterifying the corresponding N-aryl-anthranilic acids, which may be obtained by reacting alkali metal salts of o-halogen benzoic acids with suitably substituted anilines.
