titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polyester molding compositions |
abstract | An unsaturated polyester is made by heating together at 150 DEG -250 DEG C. (a) 1 mol of fumaric, maleic, citraconic or itaconic acid or anhydride, (b) 5-10 mols of adipic acid, (c) 2-8 mols of isophthalic acid, (d) 5-10 mols of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, 1 : 2-propylene glycol or 1 : 3-butylene glycol and (e) 3-10 mols of neopentyl glycol. The reactants may also include 0,1-0,75 mols of glycerol, trimethylol ethane or trimethylol propane, and the alcohols provide sufficient hydroxyl groups to exceed by 5-15% the number of carboxyl groups in the acidic components (a) (b) and (c). The storage life of the polyester may be increased by adding hydroquinone, resorcinol, tannin or N-phenyl-beta-naphthylamine. Moulding compositions, suitable for use as electrical insulation, comprise (1) 90-30 parts of the above polyester, (2) 10-70 parts of a finely divided filler at least 70% of which is a non-fibrous filler of average particle size less than 5 microns and preferably no greater than 1 micron and (3) a polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, ditertiary butyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, di-t-butyl diperphthalate, p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide or dicumyl peroxide, and, possibly, (4) a plasticizer, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate or neopentyl adipate. Specified non-fibrous fillers are silica, calcium carbonate, aluminium silicate, magnesium silicate, talc, iron oxides, diatomaceous earth, hydrated alumina, hydrated silica, mica, kaolin, bentonite and glass and these may be coated with a minor amount of melamine resin, aluminium or magnesium stearate, tall oil or stearic acid. Up to 30% of these fillers may be replaced by fibres (preferably chopped or finely divided) of asbestos, cotton, rayon, glass, nylon, polyethylene terephtholate or acrylonitrile resin. |
