titleOfInvention | Polymerization of olefins |
abstract | Olefins are polymerized by treating them at 0 to 250 DEG C. with a catalyst consisting of a halide of a Group IVA metal including uranium and a reducing agent capable of reducing the metal halide. Small quantities of aluminium chloride or other IIIB metal halide may also be present. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, 1 or 2-butene, -pentene, -hexene, or -octene, 1-dodecene, 2 or 3-methyl-1-butene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, 4-vinylcyclohexene, 2-methyl-2-butene, cyclohexene, vinyl naphthalene, styrene, butadiene, isoprene, ethylene isobutylene, ethylenebutadiene, ethylene-styrene and isobutyleneisoprene. Specified halides are titanium tetrachloride, trichloride, and dichloride, the tetrabromide, tetraiodide, tetrafluoride, the dyfluoridedichloride, the monochloridetrifluoride or tribromide, the dichloride diiodide, the dichloride diiodide and their mixtures, zirconium tetratri-or di-chloride, zirconium tetrafluoride, hafnium tetra or trichloride or triodide, and uranium trichloride. Specified reducing agents are aluminium, gallium, sodium, lithium, potassium, calcium barium, indium, magnesium, zinc, iron, cobalt, beryllium, boron, tin, nickel, antimony, bismuth, manganese, sodium hydride, lithium hydride, calcium hydride, the chlorides of chromium, copper, iron, tin, phosphorus, and antimony, stannous phosphide, cuprous cyanide, ferrous acetate, sodium azide, potassium azide, and sodium acetate. Solvents specified are butane, hexane, heptane, octane, decane, xylene, and benzene. The polymerization may also take place in the absence of solvents, e.g. by the use of a fluidized bed-either stationary or moving. The catalyst may then be carried on inert fluidizing media, e.g. alumina, silica, and activated carbon. Specification 874,215 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 776,326, 810,023, 811,633 and 813,797. |
