abstract | A gasoline having a research octane number (unleaded) of at least 90 and containing at least 20% by volume of aromatic hydrocarbons and less than 30% by volume of olefinic hydrocarbons, contains from 1 to 4 millilitres of lead tetramethyl per U.S. gallon. Preferably the gasoline contains 20 to 60%, especially 30 to 40%, of aromatic hydrocarbons, 20 to 60%, especially 50 to 60%, of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons, and 0 to 30%, especially 5 to 15%, of olefinic hydrocarbons. In examples gasolines of various compositions contain lead tetramethyl, and, for comparison, lead tetraethyl. |
