titleOfInvention Process and apparatus for potentiometrically measuring and reducing chromate ions inaqueous solution
abstract 853,326. Electric tests. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. May 9, 1958 [May 25, 1957]. No. 14971/58. Class 37 In a process for potentiometrically measuring and reducing chromate ions in an aqueous solution in which the measurement is carried out with the aid of a glass electrode and a platinum measuring electrode, passivation of the latter is avoided by adding to the solution a reducing agent, e.g. sodium bisulphite or sulphurous acid, in an amount so controlled by the potential measurement that the solution has alternately an oxidising action and a reducing action. As described, a sample of the test solution flows through the measuring electrode in a branch pipe from a measuring and detoxicating vessel, the resulting measurement controlling a valve through a regulator to supply reducing agent to the solution at the inlet to the vessel. From the vessel the solution passes to a final reaction container where the reducing process is completed. Prior to measurement, the pH value of the sample is made less than 2 by the addition of sulphuric acid, and the sample is also heated to a temperature above 15‹C., preferably above 30 ‹C., to prevent time lag in the measurement process.
