titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for separation and recovery of filter aid and catalyst used in polymerization of olefins |
abstract | The separation and recovery of filter aid from admixture with a solid substantially water-insoluble polymerization catalyst, wherein an oxide of a heavy metal is the principal polymerization promoting material, and which is used in a low-pressure polymerization process is accomplished by drying said filter aidcatalyst mixture, dispersing said dried mixture in water or in an aqueous solution, removing floating catalyst, and removing and recovering filter aid which sinks in the water or solution, said catalyst and filter aid each having a specific gravity greater than that of the aqueous solution employed. The catalyst may be one employed in the polymerization or copolymerization of olefines such as ethylene, propylene or other 1-olefines by the low pressure process in the presence of a solvent such as cyclohexane and other paraffins and cycloparaffins such as propane, isobutane, n-butane, pentane, cyclopentane, hexane, heptane or octane. The catalyst may be one containing chromium oxide, e.g. chromium oxide-silica-alumina, and is separated from the polymerization product mixture by filtration in the presence of a filter-aid such as diatomaceous earth, leaving a mixed residue of filter-aid and catalyst. The catalyst-filter aid mixture may be pulverized after drying and a list of apparatus is given for separating the floating and non-floating portions of the aqueous dispersion. Specifications 790,195 and 804,641 are referred to. |
