titleOfInvention | Variable products from montan wax and a process for their manufacture |
abstract | Products are obtained from resin-containing montan wax, or a mixture of a resin-containing crude montan wax and montan resin obtained by extracting crude montan wax, the resin content being at least 25% in both cases, by oxidatively bleaching to yield a product having an iodine number above 3. The bleaching may be effected with chromic acid at temperatures of 90-130 DEG C. or higher, with or without the application of pressure. The oxidation products may be partially or completely esterified with polyhydric alcohols (including phenols), e.g. ethylene, propylene, diethylene, triethylene, thiodiethylene and thiodipropylene glycols, butane diols, hexane diols, butane triols, glycerol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, triethanolamine, resorcinol, hydroxymethylphenol and polyols containing 2 or more free hydroxyl groups which have been etherified with alkyl radicals having 12-20 carbon atoms, e.g. lauryl, myristyl, cetyl, stearyl or oleyl. Catalysts, e.g. sulphuric acid, benzene sulphonic acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid may be used in the esterification. Before or after the esterification, carboxylic acids, such as wax acids having >18 carbon atoms, fatty acids with 16-22 carbon atoms e.g. stearic, arachidic, behenic, oleic or palmitic acids, or dicarboxylic acids having 4-10 carbon atoms, e.g. succinic, maleic, adipic, sebacic and phthalic acids. The esterification products as well as the free acids may be reacted with amines, e.g. stearylamine, dodecylamine, octadecylamine, cyclohexylamine, ethylene, propylene, butylene and hexamethylene diamines, diethylene triamine, p-phenylene diamine, p-toluidine, and benzidine. Any free carboxylic groups present in the esterified and amidated products may be converted into salts, e.g. calcium, magnesium, zinc and aluminium salts. |
