titleOfInvention | Improvements in the polymerisation of olefinic compounds |
abstract | Polymers, copolymers or terpolymers of compounds of formula R1 R2 C = CR3 R4 where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, saturated or unsaturated linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon radicals, heterocyclic radicals, halogen substituted hydrocarbon radicals, or polar atoms or groups such as halogen atoms or esters, ether or -CN groups are prepared using as the catalyst system a boron trialkyl and up to 3% of the compound(s) to be polymerized of a salt of a transition metal. Specified monomers are ethylene, propylene, butylene, iso-olefins, dienes, styrene and derivatives thereof substituted in the aromatic ring, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, p vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and fluorides, trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethers, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids and their halogen substitution products, allyl halides and esters acrylonitrile, methoxylonitrile, and N-vinyl pyridine. Boron triethyl and tri-n-butyl are specified as are cadmium, nickelous, silver, cobaltous, chromic and cupric chlorides. The polymerization may take place in bulk, in an inert organic medium or in aqueous medium.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst system comprises a boron trialkyl and up to 3% of the monomer of a salt of a metal of the 3rd to 12th positions after an inert gas in one of the long periods of the Periodic Table. Boron triethyl and tri-n-butyl are specified as are cadmium, nickelons, silver, cobaltons, chromic and cupric chlorides. |
