titleOfInvention | Polymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds |
abstract | Vinyl aromatic monomers of the formula: <FORM:0851657/IV(a)/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or methyl, are polymerized at-50 DEG C. to 80 DEG C. using as catalyst an oxide of aluminium, platinum, molybdenum, cobalt or magnesium or a mixture thereof including mixtures with silica. Specified monomers are styrene and monomethyl styrene. The polymerization may take place in bulk or in solution and the catalyst may be activated before polymerization by treating with a reducing gas, e.g. hydrogen at 300-500 DEG C. for 3 or more hours. |
