abstract Organosilanes are prepared by reacting organopolysiloxanes with organoaluminium compounds of the formula RaAlX3-a, where a is 1 to 3 R is alkyl or aryl and X is halogen, hydrogen or alkoxy, and distilling off the silane. Specified aluminium compounds are trimethyl aluminium, methyl aluminium dichloride and sesquichloride, dimethyl aluminium chloride, and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and sesquibromide. Aluminium halides may be added. The organoaluminium compounds may be prepared in situ. The temperature is preferably from 120 DEG to 400 DEG C. and the reaction is preferably effected under pressure. Inert solvents, e.g. hydrocarbons, may be present. Examples are given in which the siloxanes comprise (1) to (4) a composition of silica filler with a gum which is composed of dimethylsiloxane or a copolymer of dimethyl and diphenyl siloxanes, (5) octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane (c) trimethylsilyl end-stopped dimethylsiloxane fluid, (7) solid hydrolysis produce of MeSiCl3, (11) scrap siloxane elastomer, (15) octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane.
