titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to thermoplastic materials |
abstract | A thermoplastic polymeric alkyl acrylate and/or alkyl alkacrylate has incorporated therein from 0,01 to 0,4% by weight of epoxy ester group substituents. The incorporation takes place by the copolymerization of minor amounts of an epoxy alcohol ester of an acrylic or alkacrylic acid with a major amount of an alkyl acrylate and/or alkacrylate. It is preferred that the polymer contains at least 99% of the acrylate e.g. methyl methacrylate and the ethyl, propyl, butyl and higher esters thereof. The epoxy ester is preferably glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate although such epoxy alcohols and ester forming derivatives as epoxyoctadecanol epoxydodecanol, 5,6 - epoxyhexanol - 2,3,4 - epoxy-2,2,4-trimethylpentanol-3, beta-hydroxyethylethyleneoxide, 3-hydroxy- 1,2,-oxidocyclohexane, alphahydroxy -methyl-alpha-phenylethylene oxide and 3,4- dihydroxy-benzyl ethylene oxide are specified. There may also be present a compound which is acidic or becomes acidic on melting e.g. the hydroxy esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester of a hydroxy or alkoxy acid such as methyl salicylate. Specification 648,959 is referred to. |
