titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the production and use of di-alcohols
abstract The invention comprises polyesters of dibasic acids with dialcohols of the formula R(OR 1OH)2 where R is a divalent polychloro-diphenyl radical containing at least 6 chlorine atoms and R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical and a process for their preparation by esterification of the acid and the alcohol. The dibasic acid may be a saturated aliphatic acid, e.g. adipic acid, an unsaturated aliphatic acid, e.g. fumaric or maleic acid or an aromatic acid, e.g. terephthalic acid. The reaction may be carried out by heating in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and the polyester stabilised by addition of hydroquinone. The examples describe the preparation of poly [bis-(hydroxy-ethoxy)-octachlorodiphenyl fumarate], poly-[bis-(hydroxyethoxy)-octachlorodiphenyl fumarate adipate] and poly-[bis-(hydroxyethoxy)-hexachlorodiphenyl maleate]. Flame-resistant copolymers are prepared by copolymerising a polyester as defined above in which the acid component is an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with an addition polymerisable unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene or allyl phthalate, e.g. in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. The examples describe the copolymerisation of the three unsaturated polyesters specifically mentioned above with styrene.ALSO:The invention comprises di-alcohols of the general formula R(OR1OH)2 where R is a divalent polychloro-diphenyl radical containing at least 6 chlorine atoms and R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical and a process for their preparation by heating an alkali metal salt of a dihydroxy-polychlorodiphenyl R(OH)2 with a chlorinated alcohol Cl-R1-OH or by heating an olefine oxide R1 = O with a dihydroxy-polychlorodiphenyl R(OH)2. The reactants mentioned to introduce the group R1 are ethylene and propylene chlorhydrin, chlorocyclohexanol, ethylene and propylene oxide and epoxycyclohexane. The alkali metal salt may be formed in situ from an alkali metal hydroxide and a dihydroxypolychlorodiphenyl, the latter compound may be obtained by controlled saponification of a polychlorodyphenyl, e.g., dihydroxy-hexa-chlorodiphenyl from octachlorodiphenyl. The examples describe the preparation of bis-(hydroxy-ethoxy) hexachloro- and octachloro-diphenyl. The di-alcohols may be converted to polyesters by reaction with dibasic acids and any ethylenically unsaturated polyesters may be copolymerised with an addition-polymerisable unsaturated monomer (see Group IV(a)).
