titleOfInvention Process for removal of metallic catalyst residues from hydrocarbon polymers
abstract Metallic catlyst residues are removed from polymers of terminally unsaturated olefines, e.g. polythene, formed with a catalyst comprising a compound of a transition metal, e.g. Ti, Zr, Cr, Mo, W, Ce, Nb, or Ta, and an organo-metallic compound, or a metal hydride, or an alkali metal, by introducing an aqueous hydrated colloidal silica dispersion into an inert hydrocarbon medium, e.g. cyclohexane, containing the polymer, at a temperature above 125 DEG C., and filtering the polymer solution at a temperature above 125 DEG C. The polymer in solution as prepared, before treatment with the silica dispersion, may be heated at a temperature of 175 DEG -225 DEG C. under sufficient pressure to keep the solvent in the liquid phase. The polymer can be separated from the solution by distillation and the molten polymer extruded into sheets, ribbons or rods. In an example a polythene solution is made by reacting ethylene in the presence of cyclohexane and a catalyst formed in situ consisting of titanium tetrachloride, vanadium oxytrichloride, and aluminium triisobutyl and the solution purified by heating it to 225 DEG C. then violently agitating it with an aqueous dispersion containing 25% hydrated, colloidal silica and filtering the mix.
