titleOfInvention Improvements relating to electrical contact-making brushes
abstract 848,295. Brushes for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 21, 1958 [Dec. 2, 1957], No. 37554/58. Class 35. In a high-altitude brush of graphite and with or without copper or silver, lubrication is provided by inserts composed of a mixture of silver and a compound containing an element having a chemical affinity for carbon, e.g. oxygen, sulphur, a halogen, nitrogen or phosphorus, and grooving of the commutator at low altitudes is prevented by the use of additional materials which prevent the formation of acid and abrasive oxides. In addition graphite may be added to thin out these harmful substances and so reduce their effect. The lubricating compounds are normally metallic sulphides, halides, oxides or salts. Molybdenum disulphide is preferred, but cadmium, lead and silver sulphides, cadmium iodide and calcium fluoride, zinc, lead and magnesium oxides are also mentioned. Of the additional materials according to the invention, barium carbonate or sodium silicate may be used to prevent the formation of sulphuric acid when molybdenum disulphide is used as lubricant, the latter being also capable of dissolving molybdenum trioxide. Various ranges of relative proportions are mentioned. Specification 768,928 is referred to.
