abstract | Polybutadiene is prepared from the monomer using a catalyst comprising a complex hydride MAIH4 (M = alkali metal, preferably Li) and Ti I4; the presence of an inert hydrocarbon diluent is preferred. In obtaining the polymers, an antioxidant such as phenyl-beta-naphthylamine may be used, and purification may be effected by means of an alcohol, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. The polymers are stated to be rubbery, and a polybutadiene having 70-90% trans-1:4 and not more than 10% 1:2, the butane being cis-1:4 addition, is claimed.ALSO:A catalyst for polymerizing butadiene comprises (a) MalH4, wherein M is Na, K, Rb, Cs or (preferably) Li, and (b) TiI4. Preferably, (1) use is made of an inert diluent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene or paraffins with up to 10 carbon atoms, in mixing the constituents and in subsequent polymerization, (2) the MAlH4 is added to a solvent before use, e.g. a dialkyl ether such as diethyl ether or a cyclic ether such as dioxane or tetrahydrofuran; (3) the catalyst is aged before use at about 30-100 DEG C. for about 10 minutes-24 hours. |
