titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of chlorine
abstract In the oxidation of hydrogen chloride to chlorine by the continuous passage of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen chloride and oxygen over a chromic oxide catalyst at a temperature of e.g. 400 DEG C. the activity of the catalyst is maintained by the continual presence of chromyl chloride in the gaseous mixture. The molar ratio of chromyl chloride to hydrogen chloride may be 1 to 100-10,000, preferably 1 to 1,000-10,000. The chromic oxide may be supported or unsupported in a fixed or moving bed. Carriers specified are alumina, silica, and pumice. The chromic oxide may be amorphous, having been prepared at a temperature of below 400 DEG C., e.g. by calcination of ammonium bichromate or by calcination of chromic acid followed by reduction with hydrogen. The oxygen may be in the form of air. Examples are given. Specification 584,790 is referred to.
