titleOfInvention | Tri-ú¯-propanolamine borate and composition containing same |
abstract | A plasticized composition comprises (1) a polymer containing an average of at least 75% by weight of acrylonitrile and (2) a plasticizing amount of tri-n-propanolamine borate (see Group IV(b)). The polymer may be a homopolymer of acrylonitrile or a copolymer of acrylonitrile with a monomer containing a CH2 = CH < group such as vinyl esters; vinyl and vinylidene halides; allyl-type alcohols; allyl and other unsaturated alcohol esters of monobasic acids; acrylic and alkacrylic acids and esters, amides and nitriles of such acids; and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. Preferably the molecular weight of the polymer is within the range 25,000 to 300,000. The amount of tri-n-propanolamine borate used may vary from 1% to 50% of the weight of the total composition.ALSO:The invention comprises tri-n-propanolamine borate. In an example, tri-n-propanolamine boric acid and dry toluene are heated to reflux under an atmosphere of nitrogen to produce tri-n-propanolamine borate. The product is used as a plasticiser for acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers (see Group IV(a)). Tri-n-propanolamine is prepared by reacting tris (2-carbethoxyethyl) amine with lithium aluminium hydride in anhydrous ether and hydrolysing the complex formed. Tris (2-carbethoxyethyl) amine and bis (2-carbethoxyethyl) amine are prepared by reacting ethyl acrylate with liquid ammonia. |
