abstract | 845,123. Batteries. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. June 27, 1957 [June 28, 1956; Aug. 3, 1956], No. 20246/57. Class 53. A cell which when required for use is activated by a gas is provided with an electrolyte-forming substance which 'reacts with the gas to produce water. The gas may consist of boron trifluoride or silicon tetrafluoride, and the electrolyte-forming substance of a hydroxide or hydrated inorganic salt, for example the chloride, carbonate, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride or phosphate of aluminium, barium, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, strontium or zinc, or of a saturated dicarboxylic acid such as oxalic acid or crotonic acid, or of dihydroxy phenols, resorcinol or catechol. The anode of the cell may consist of aluminium, magnesium, cadmium, manganese, iron, nickel, lead or zinc, and the depolarizer of an oxide of manganese, lead, copper, silver, chromium or vanadium. A diffusion member is also incorporated in the cell to allow the gas to gain access to the electrolyte substance. Fig. 1 shows a battery comprising four annular cells joined in series and surrounding an ampule 18 containing compressed gas. The ampule is closed by a diaphragm 20 which can be ruptured by a point 30. Each cell comprises a zinc anode 10 having a carbon layer 12 on one side, and on the other side a dry separator 14 of paper, &c., containing the electrolyte-forming substance adjacent to which is a diffuser 16 of paper or textile fibres in which a metal oxide depolarizer is distributed. A carbon coating 12a on a zinc plate 10a forms the positive pole of the cell. In a modification the depolarizer and diffuser are made as two separate layers, and in another the electrolyte-containing separator also serves as the diffuser. The electrotrolyte-containing separator may be made by calendering a mixture of paper fibres and ground electrolyte-forming substance and drying in an oven. A zinc anode of extended surface area may be made by compressing zinc powder and paper fibres moistened with electrolyte. Specification 836,457 is referred to. |
