titleOfInvention Making cyclopentadienyl manganese compounds electrolytically
abstract 845,074. Preparing manganese cyclopentadiene tricarbonyl electrolytically. ETHYL CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1958 [April 25, 1958], No. 41017/58. Class 41. Manganese cyclopentadienyl tricarbonyls are made by electrolysis of a mixture of a manganese compound, a cyclopentadiene hydrocarbon and CO under pressure in the presence of a carbonyl of a transition metal of Group VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII. The manganese compound consists of manganous inorganic or organic salts, and is dissolved in a solvent or complexing agent which is preferably also a solvent for CO and the metal carbonyl. For example, ethers (including simple aliphatic and aromatic ethers, and glycol ethers); amines, e.g. dicyclohexylamine; amides, e.g. formamide, N-methyl-pyrrolidine, hexamethyl phosphoramide; and nitriles, e.g. propionitrile. Where the manganese compound is not soluble in the solvent a salt assisting electrolysis may be present, e.g. alkali metal or aluminium halides or salts of organic acids. Manganous halides or salts of organic acids are the preferred manganese compound. In examples, (1) an electrolytic cell free of air and moisture is charged with N : N dimethyl formamide, manganous chloride, cyclo pentadiene dimer, and a small amount of iron pentacarbonyl as catalyst carbon monoxide is fed in at 1,000 p.s.i.g. Electrolysis is effected at 25/30 volts, at 195‹ C. The electrolyte contained methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, which is separated by steam distillation and a final fractionation; (2) the electrolyte consists of a manganese complex Na 4 Mu (CN) 6 , methyl cyclopentadiene monomer, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether as solvent, iron monacarbonyl as catalyst, and a little sodium chloride; carbon monoxide being supplied under a pressure of 1,000 p.s.i.g. The electrolyte is treated as in Example 1.
