titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to sulphonium compounds
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0845021/IV(b)/1> (wherein R, R1 and R2 are the same or different alkyl groups each having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n is 4, 5 or 6, R3 and R4 together with the nitrogen atom form a piperidine, pyrrolidine or morpholine ring and X- is a monovalent anion or 2X- is the divalent anion of a dibasic acid) and their preparation by treating the appropriate N-(alkylthioalkyl)-heterocyclic compound or a monoalkyl quaternary salt thereof with a suitable quaternizing agent, particularly an alkyl halide, conveniently in a solvent such as p acetone or ethanol. The invention also comprises the preparation of the N-(alkylthioalkyl)-heterocyclic compounds by the reaction of a hydrohalide salt of an appropriate N-haloalkyl heterocyclic compound with a metal salt e.g. a sodium salt, of an alkane thiol, conveniently in a solvent such as ethanol. Anions referred to are the chloride, bromide, iodide, citrate and tartrate ions, the organic acid salts being advantageously prepared by treating the halide salts with a silver salt of the appropriate organic acid or alternatively, with the free acid in presence of ethylene oxide. Examples are given. In the Provisional Specification R3, R4 and the adjacent nitrogen atom are defined as a heterocyclic ring system.
