titleOfInvention A continuous process for the roasting of arsenopyrites ores
abstract The continuous process of roasting arsenopyrites ores of the parent Specification comprising preheating the ores in a preceding separate stage by direct heat-exchange with a portion of the SO2 gases from the subsequent roasting stage, passing the preheated ore to the roasting stage, and recovering the remainder of the SO2 gases from the roasting stage as arsenic-free gas is modified by introducing O2 into the roasting stage in amount sufficiently in excess of the p stoichiometric requirement for roasting to ensure that the temperature of the ore in the preheating stage is raised to at least 800 DEG C. by combustion therein of labile S with the excess O2 in the portion of SO2 gases from the roasting stage passing in direct heat-exchange with the ore in the preheating stage, and retaining the ore in the preheating stage for a period of time insufficient for the distillation and combustion of the whole of the labile S. Arsenopyrites ore of size 0.4-0.1 mm. may be preheated to 800-815 DEG C. and arsenic sulphide is separated from the resulting SO2 gases. After 10-20 minutes residence time in the preheating stage, where the ore is also heated by indirect heat-exchange with the remainder of the SO2 gases from the roasting stage, the ferrous sulphide with some labile S is roasted by a blast of hot air at under 1000 DEG C. Most of the lead is also removed in the preheating stage. Specification 755,344 also is referred to.
