titleOfInvention | Interpolymers of low imflammability |
abstract | Flame-resisting interpolymers are prepared from a monomeric vinyl compound and a polyester prepared by the condensation of an a -b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and an aromatic compound having nuclear halogen and two aromatically bound hydroxy groups which have been oxyalkylated, the interpolymerizing mixture having a halogen content of at least 5% and the halogen being chlorine or bromine. Suitable acids for preparing the polyester are maleic, fumaric, aconic, itaconic and citraconic acids which may be mixed with succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, iso- or tere-phthalic, phthalic, tetrachoro- or tetrahydrophthalic, or hexachlorendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic acid. The diol 1, 4-dihydroxy-ethyl- (or -propyl-)-tetrachlorohydroquinone, 4, 41-dihydroxy-ethoxy-3, 31, 5-trichlorodiphenyl or-3, 31, 5, 51-tetrachlorodiphenyl or -octachlorodiphenyl, 4, 41-dihydroxypropoxy-3, 31, 5, 51-tetrachlorodiphenyl, 4, 41-dihydroxy-3, 31-dichlorodiphenyl-sulphone, 4, 41-dihydroxyethoxy-3, 31, 5, 51-tetrachlorodiphenyl-methane 4, 41-dihydroxyethoxy-3, 31-dichloropropane, 4, 41-dihydroxyethoxy (or-propoxy)-3, 31, 5, 51-tetrachloro (or -tetrabromo)-diphenylpropane, or 4, 41-dihydroxy-ethoxy-3, 31, 5, 51-tetrachlorodiphenyl-cyclohexane. These may be partly replaced by ethylene-diethylene- or 1, 2-propylene-glycol, 1, 3-propane-, 2, 2,-dimethyl-1, 3-propane-, 1, 3-butane-, 1, 4-butane-, 1, 6-hexane, or 2, 21, 3-trimethyl-1, 5-pentane-diol. The vinyl monomer can be vinyl benzoate, vinyl acetate, diallyl phthalate or adipate, dimethallyl succinate or fumerate, styrene, methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, divinylbenzene, methyl acrylate or methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, diallyl phenyl phosphate or triallyl phosphate. Peroxide catalysts may be used. Antimony or phosphorus compounds are preferably added, e.g. antimony trioxide, triallyl phosphate or trichloroethyl phosphate and glass chips, matting or fibres may also be added. |
