titleOfInvention A process for the production of hyposulphurous acid and salts and esters thereof
abstract A hyposulphurous acid ester is produced by the reduction of a sulphurous acid ester with a metal borohydride in a solvent medium. Lithium, sodium, potassium, and calcium borohydrides are specified. Water and alcohol are specified as solvent media. A sulphurous acid ester may be added to an alcoholic solution containing sodium borohydride and sodium hydroxide. The hyposulphurous acid ester solution may be reacted with formaldehyde to yield a hydroxymethane sulphuric acid ester.ALSO:Hyposulphurous acid or a salt thereof is produced by the reduction of sulphurous acid or a salt thereof with a metal borohydride in a solvent medium. Lithium, sodium, potassium, and calcium borohydrides are specified. Water and alcohol are specified as solvent media Gaseous sulphur dioxide may be added to an alcohol solution containing sodium borohydride and sodium hydroxide; solid lithium borohydride may be added to an aqueous calcium bisulphite solution; and aqueous potassium borohydride solution, followed by aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, may be added to aqueous sodium bisulphite solution. An example is given.
