abstract | 841,676. Electrical measuring systems. AJAX MAGNETHERMIC CORPORATION, Oct. 2, 1958 [Oct. 17, 1957], No. 31450/58. Class 40 (1). The temperature of a metal billet is determined by means of a thermocouple comprising two prods movable into and out of contact with the billet to which is delivered a gaseous medium comprising a flux to be burnt with a flame in the region of contact between the billet and the prods. As shown, a metal billet 11 is retained in an induction furnace 10 by an arm 13 of a U-shaped member 12 pivoted at 16 so as to be movable by means of the fluid cylinder 17 from the position shown at 12<SP>1</SP> to the inward position shown in solid lines. The member 12 carries a leaf-spring 23 which in turn carries a H-shaped casting 27. A thermocouple is formed by two rods 29 of dissimilar metal housed in holes in the casting 27 and biased into contact with the billet 11 by springs 30. The electrical contact between the rods 29 and the billet 11 is improved by dissolving oxide or scale by means of a gas flame F emanating from a tube 35 carrying a combustible gas mixed with a flux such as methyl borate azeotrope and acetone. Alternatively fluxes referred to in Specifications 532,267 and 534,084 may be used. Combustible gases specified are acetylene, propane, hydrogen or natural gas. It is stated that the presence of the flame does not cause appreciable error in the temperature measurement. |
