titleOfInvention | Polymerisation catalysts |
abstract | Ethylene is polymerized by contact with a catalyst prepared by treating a rare earth compound with a hydride, alkyl hydride, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl of aluminium or a complex of such a compound. The ratio of the rare earth compound to the aluminium compound may be between 10:1 and 1:10. The catalyst may be prepared by ball-milling the rare earth compound with a solution of the aluminium compound in a hydrocarbon solvent, Ethylene is polymerized by contacting it with the catalyst in a hydrocarbon solvent at a superatmospheric pressure. In examples, ethylene is polymerized using catalysts prepared from lanthanum trichloride, ceric oxide, cerous chloride, samarium trichloride, gadolinium chloride, neodymium trichloride and praseodymium trichloride, and aluminium triethyl, aluminium tri-isobutyl, and lithium aluminium hydride. Specifications 776,326 and 810,268 are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst is prepared by treating a rare earth compound with a hydride, alkyl hydride, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl of aluminium or a complex of such a compound.
