titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to lubricating oil compositions and to the operation of internal combustion engines |
abstract | A lubricating oil composition particularly suitable for use in diesel engines run on residual fuels comprises a stable suspension of particles of one or more basic solids in a mobile lubricating oil which has been soap-thickened to an extent sufficient to give it a finite yield value at 15 DEG C. but insufficient to destroy its mobility, at least some of the particles being of non-colloidal size. The lubricating oil may be a mineral or synthetic oil. The basic solids are preferably basic compounds of calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium or zinc, e.g. CaCO3, Ca(OH)2, basic magnesium carbonate, Mg(OH)2 or MgO. Preferably the major proportion of the particles have a dimension of less than 1m . The basic solids preferably comprise 0.5-10% wt. of the composition. The soaps used are the metal salts of fatty acids. The compositions may be prepared by first thickening the bulk of the oil with the soap or a soap-based grease, adding a slurry of the basic particles in the remainder of the oil, passing through a homogenizer and deaerating. In examples 4% wt. of calcium carbonate or hydroxide or 2.3% wt. of magnesium hydroxide is added to an S.A.E. 30 mineral oil thickened with from 1 to 3% wt. of lithium stearate, aluminium stearate or a calcium soap of C16/C18 fatty acid, and in some instances a silicone anti-foam agent is incorporated. |
