titleOfInvention Process for purifying 1,1,1-trimethylol alkanes having at least 6 carbon atoms
abstract Crude 1.1.1-trimethylol-alkanes containing at least 6 carbon atoms, obtained by the condensation of saturated aldehydes having at least 4 carbon atoms with formaldehyde in alkali medium, acidification and removal of the salts formed, are purified by adjusting the crude product to a pH value of 6.0 to 7.5 by the addition of an alkaline substance, heating the solution to a temperature of 50 DEG to 250 DEG C., adjusting the pH of the solution to 4.0 to 5.0 by addition of a sparingly volatile or nonvolatile inorganic acid and subjecting the reaction mixture obtained to thin layer distillation in vacuo. Preferably the purification is carried out on solutions which are free from salt and water. These may be obtained by adding an acid, preferably formic acid, to the solution so that on evaporating in vacuo an anhydrous melt is obtained containing the salt in suspension. The salt may be removed by centrifuging or filtering. The purification process is also improved if the 1.1.1-trimethylol alkane is subjected to thin layer distillation in vacuo before adding the alkaline substance. In the examples 1.1.1-trimethylol propane is prepared by condensation of formaldehyde with butyraldehyde in the presence of milk of lime and is purified according to the above process.
