titleOfInvention | Film-forming compositions |
abstract | A film-forming synthetic resin composition comprises essentially a particulate vinyl fluoride polymer or copolymer in intimate admixture with at least one organic compound <FORM:0838043/IV (a)/1> where R is a divalent saturated C3-5 hydrocarbon radical, of which 3 or 4 carbon atoms are in the ring and Z is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing up to 8 carbon atoms. The copolymers may be derived from a predominant amount of vinyl fluoride copolymerized with another mono-ethylenic monomer such as a hydrocarbon, e.g. ethylene, propylene, isobutylene or styrene; a halogen-substituted olefin, e.g. vinyl chloride or bromide, 1,1-dichloro- or fluoro-ethylene, di- or tri-fluorochloroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluoropropylene or difluoro-isobutylene; a vinyl ester, e.g. of formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, pivalic, benzoic, stearic or an inorganic acid; an alkenyl ether, e.g. vinyl ethyl ether, tetrafluoroethyl allyl ether or vinyl dioxolane; a vinyl ketone, e.g. methyl vinyl ketone; an N-vinyl imide, e.g. succinimide or phthalimide; acrylic or methacrylic acid or such derivatives as esters, nitriles, amides, anhydrides or acid halides thereof, e.g. methyl, beta-hydroxyethyl or allyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or N-butyl methacrylamide; a derivative of maleic or fumaric acid, e.g. diethyl maleate or dimethyl fumarate; or a propenyl ester, e.g. allyl or isopropenyl acetate. Specified organic compounds of the above formula are: 2-pyrrolidone; N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone; N - iso-propyl - 2 - pyrrolidone; 5 - methyl - 2 - pyrrolidone; 5 - ethyl - 2 - pyrrolidone; 3,3-dimethyl-2-pyrrolidone; 2-piperidone and N-methyl-2-piperidone. Examples describe in some detail the formation of films from polyvinyl fluoride and each of the above N-compounds by a variety of techniques, viz:-extrusion into baths of first hot then cold white mineral oil and removal of oil and N-compound with acetone; dispersion on a metal belt or plate and heating in an oven or hot silicone oil or by infra-red rays followed by volatilization of the N-compound in a current of hot air; extrusion from a slotted hopper into a bath of cold water and volatilization of the N-compound in a current of hot air. The preferred concentration of polyvinyl fluoride in the composition varies with the film-forming technique to be employed, viz:25-40% (weight) for extrusion into coalescing hot oil; 10-60% for extrusion on to a plate or belt and coalescing by heat; 20-85% for hot extrusion into a cold quench bath. Specification 605,445 is referred to. |
