titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the polymerization of olefins |
abstract | Olefines are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst mixture comprising an inert liquid medium and a complex consisting of an organoaluminium compound containing at least one hydrocarbon radical linked through a carbon atom to aluminium and a compound of a heavy metal selected from metals occupying the 4th to 6th positions of the long periods of the Periodic Table of Elements (pages 392 and 393 of the "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics," 1954-1955), by mixing the olefin prior to forming the catalyst mixture with at least one constituent of the mixture, forming the catalyst mixture and passing additional olefin into the mix whereby forming the desired polyolefin. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene, a butylene, a pentene, hexene, 1,3-butadiene, or isoprene. The ratio of the organo-aluminium compound to the heavy metal compound is preferably between 1:4 to 4:1. The liquid medium may be hexane, heptane, or benzene. The aluminium compound may be triisobutylaluminium, diisobutylaluminium hydride, dipropylaluminium chloride, phenylaluminium dihydride, dioctylaluminium bromide, cyclohexyl - bromo - aluminium hydride, di - tert - butylphenyl - aluminium - hydride, n - pentylisobutylaluminium chloride, dioctylaluminium hydride, or dipropylcyclohexyl aluminium. The heavy metal compound exemplified is titanium tetrachloride. The polymerization reaction may be terminated by the addition of methanol. |
