titleOfInvention | Sintered body mainly consisting of molybdenum disilicide |
abstract | A sintered material e.g. for use as a resistor comprises a substantial proportion of molybdenum disilicide with 5-40% by volume of silica glass fibres as reinforcement. It may also contain one or more disilicides of titanium, tantalum or zirconium, or oxides or silicon carbide. The silica glass fibres are less than 0,08 inch long and between 0,00004 inch and 0,00079 inch thick. The material is pressed, extruded or otherwise shaped to the desired form e.g. a rod or tube and sintered first in a hydrogen atmosphere up to 1200 DEG C. and then slowly in air up to 1500-1600 DEG C. The mixture of silica glass fibres with molybdenum disilicide is mixed with a grinding liquid in a ball mill without balls to a grain size of 5m the dried, mixed with plasticisers and lubricants and subjected to cold pressing or hot extrusion. In sintering, molybdenum ions enter the silica above 1200 DEG C. 10,000 grams of molybdenum disilicide, 2000 grams of tantalum disilicide and 1000 grams of silicon carbide are ground in ball mills with benzene as grinding liquid to grains of 0,0002 inch. 1500 grams of silica glass is added in batches, and after drying, 500 grams of bentonite in water is added, the mass being kneaded to make it plastic. A mass of 850 grams molybdenum disilicide, 100 grams of titanium disilicide and 50 grams of zirconium oxide with 70 grams of silica glass wool is pressed into square resistance heating rods in a steel mill and sintered. |
