titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to 1, 4-pregnadienes and the preparation thereof |
abstract | The invention comprises cyclopentanophenanthrene compounds of the general formula <FORM:0835700/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents H2, <FORM:0835700/IV (b)/2> R represents hydrogen or an acyl group, preferably formyl or an alkanoyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms, and one of Y and Z represents a hydroxy group and the other represents hydrogen, and a process for the preparation of compounds of the above general formula wherein X, Y and Z have the above significance and R represents hydrogen or the lower alkanoyl group by subjecting the corresponding compound in which X and Y are hydrogen to the oxygenating substances produced by growing the micro-organism Heliocostylum piriforme under aerobic conditions. The above process may be modified in that the compounds prepared in which R represents hydrogen is subsequently esterified to form the 21-carboxylic ester e.g., the benzoic, salicylic, p-aminobenzoic, anisic, veratric or other aromatic ester. The alkanoyl group may be derived from acetic, propionic or isovaleric acid. Compounds of the above general formula having an 11a - or 11b -hydroxy group may be oxidized, e.g. with chromic acid in pyridine, to form the corresponding 11-keto compounds. In the examples, 1,4-pregnadiene-14,17a ,21-triol-3,20-dione and 1,4-pregnadiene-8,17a ,21-triol-3,20-dione and the corresponding 11-keto and 11b -hydroxy-substituted compounds and the 21-acetates of all these compounds are prepared. |
