titleOfInvention The preparation of esters of carboxylic acids with hydroxyalkane sulphonic acids
abstract Esters of carboxylic and hydroxyalkane sulphonic acids of the formula RCOO(CR1R11)n SO3X, wherein RCOO represents the acyloxy group of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least 8 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 represent hydrogen or alkyl groups, n represents an integer of from 2 to 4 and X represents a salt-forming cation, are prepared by reacting a mixed anhydride of a carboxylic acid and boric acid with a water-soluble salt of a hydroxyalkane sulphonic acid. The reaction will proceed at room temperature but a temperature in the range of 50 DEG to 150 DEG C. is preferred. Isethionic acid is the preferred hydroxylakane sulphonic acid but 2-hydroxypropane and hydroxybutane sulphonic acids are also suitable. The salt may be formed from an alkali metal, calcium, magnesium or a tertiary amine. The products are useful detergents. Specifications 799,909 and 824,447 are referred to.
