titleOfInvention Improvements relating to adhesive compositions
abstract An adhesive composition comprises a rubberlike copolymer of a conjugated diene and an olefinically unsaturated nitrile or ketone copolymerizable therewith, a phenol-aldehyde condensate capable of being cross-linked, a cross-linking agent for this condensate and chlorinated rubber. The copolymer is preferably a copolymer of 60-80% of butadiene together with acrylonitrile or methyl isopropyl ketone, other copolymers may be those derived from isoprene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, or 2-chlorobutadiene with methyl vinyl ketone, phenyl vinyl ketone and para-acetyl-styrene. The condensate may be derived from phenol, a xylenol, a cresol or a naphthol with formaldehyde. The cross-linking agent may be an alkylene-donor or methylene-donor such as hexamethylene tetramine and other polymethylene polyamines and polyalkylene polyamines and polymers of formaldehyde. Low boiling ketones such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone; and tricresyl phosphate, zinc oxide, sulphur, zinc di-alkyl dithiocarbamate di-aryl guanidines and calcium silicate may also be added. The composition is particularly suitable for use in joining a natural or synthetic rubber composition to a polymer of vinyl chloride or to a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinylacetate in the manufacture of flooring.
