abstract | A gasoline composition contains an alkyllead anti-knock compound, an organic halide scavenger, and a phosphoramidate of formula <FORM:0833475/III/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups of 2 to 10 carbon atoms or phenyl groups of formula <FORM:0833475/III/2> where R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or alkyl groups of 1 to 3 carbon atoms. The composition contains sufficient alkyllead compound to provide from 0.02 to 6.5 grams of lead per gallon of gasoline, from half to twice the amount of halide scavenger required to react with the lead to form lead halide, and an amount of the phosphoramidate such that the phosphorus-to-lead atom ratio is from 0.1 : 3 to 1.6 : 3. The lead compound may be tetramethyllead, tetraethyllead, tetrapropyllead, tetrabutyllead, diethyldimethyllead, or triethylmethyllead. The halide scavenger may be ethylenedichloride, ethylene dibromide, dibromotoluenes, trichlorobenzenes, dibromobutanes, acetylenetetrabromide, dibromodiethyl ether, dibromodiisopropyl ether or dichlorodiethyl ether. The phosphoramidate may be diethyl phosphoramidate, dipropyl phosphoramidate, di - (4 - n - propylphenyl) phosphoramidate, dihexyl phosphoramidate, di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoramidate, didecyl phosphoramidate, di-(3-methylphenyl) phosphoramidate, di - (2 - methylphenyl) phosphoramide, phenyl - (4 - isopropylphenyl) phosphoramidate, dibutyl phosphoramidate, di - (3 - methyl - 4 - ethylphenyl) phosphoramidate, diphenyl phosphoramidate, (2-methylphenyl) - (3,5 - diethylphenyl) phosphoramidate, dineopentyl phosphramidate, dioctyl phosphoramidate, di - (4 - isopropylphenyl) phosphoramidate, di - (4 - methylphenyl) phosphoramidate, diamyl phosphoramidate, phenyl-(4-ethylphenyl) phosphoramidate, ethyl octyl phosphoramidate, diisoamyl phosphoramidate, dixylyl phosphoramidate, or ditolyl phosphoramidate.
