titleOfInvention Improvements in the synthesis of carboxylic acids from olefinic compounds, carbon monoxide and water
abstract Carboxylic acids are made by reacting olefinic compounds with carbon monoxide and water at an elevated temperature and at an elevated pressure in the presence of a carbonyl or an organic acid salt capable of being converted to a carbonyl of a metal of the VIII group of the Periodic Table, the reaction being conducted in liquid phase by using an inert watermiscible organic solvent in which the olefinic compound, the reaction product and the catalyst are soluble, the value of the ratio of the weight of water plus the weight of olefinic compound to the weight of solvent being less than, equal to or only slightly greater than the value required for the homogeneity of the liquid phase. Solvents mentioned are acetone, dioxane, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, dimethylformamide and N-formyl-piperidine. Examples illustrate the preparation of hexahydrobenzoic acid, butyric and iso-butyric acids, a mixture of C9-aliphatic acids and dicarboxylic acids containing 5 carbon atoms.
