titleOfInvention | Process for the concentration of rock phosphate |
abstract | Rock phosphate containing calcium carbonate is treated with an unsaturated aqueous solution of sulphur dioxide to convert at least a major portion of carbonate to bisulphite, and the calcium bisulphite solution separated from the undissolved phosphate. The process may be carried out by passing gaseous SO2 through a rock phosphate slurry, said SO2 being either substantially pure or diluted with oxygen-free gases, e.g. nitrogen. From the calcium bisulphite solution, e.g. after heating to 75 DEG C., SO2 may be recovered by introducing hot gases inert towards the bisulphite, e.g. flue gases; the SO2 thus liberated may be recycled and the calcium sulphite formed at the same time and precipitated may be a useful by-product or may be worked up for SO2 recovery. |
