titleOfInvention | Polymerisation of n-vinylcarbazole |
abstract | N-vinylcarbazole is polymerized by stirring and heating at 65 DEG to 100 DEG C. in aqueous suspension in the presence of 0.01 to 0.1% by weight of the monomer of a hydrophilic colloid, and 0.1 to 2% by weight of the monomer of one or more aliphatic azo compounds. Depending on the concentration of the hydrophilic colloid, the water to monomer ratio, and the rate of stirring, either spherules of polymer are obtained which expand on heating, or fine powder is obtained incapable of expansion on heating. The spherules may be expanded in a mould to obtain a foam. In examples, N-vinylcarbazole is polymerized in the presence of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and azobisisobutyronitrile. Other colloids mentioned are polyvinyl alcohol, poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone and ammonium polymethacrylate. Another azo compound mentioned is azobis-(methyl isobutyrate). |
