abstract | Nicotinamide is prepared by reacting an aliphatic ester of nicotinic acid with excess liquid ammonia in a closed chamber at an elevated temperature of up to 285 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure, and separating the nicotinamide produced. Solvents such as alcohols may be used, and the process may be batch or continuous. In the latter case a solvent is used, and the product stream is preferably combined with a stream of preheated alcohol solvent to preclude any possibility of the nicotinamide settling in any part of the apparatus. |
